That was kind of one of the reasons why Saab pulled out long ago. They just couldn't verify spending the kind of money to have a winning machine competing with Renault, Audi, Subaru, Peugeot and many other companies that started to get big in the 80s.
I think the 99 T was the last of the factory cars in the Swedish rally. Maybe someone else knows more. It was right at that time the 4 wheel drive cars arrived (Audi Quattro) and two wheel drive didn't have much to say until they changed the groups around to make it more even.
A car company doesn't spend the money just to be in the circuit and be seen, they do it to win and nothing else.
