Saab used rallying to prove the capabilities of their cars and in some cases develop their engineer staffs. It's been stated that "win on Sunday, sell on Monday" seems to hold true. Today the complexity/opportunities are different, but many so-called luxury marques are involved in factory racing efforts which makes me wonder why Saab is not. First, the WRC (World Rally Championship) is dominated by the Ford Focus (the marvelous Euro version, not the resurrection of the old US Escort)and the Citreon C4 which do not compete with Saab in the marketplace. Subaru, Mitsubishi, and now Suzuki are all struggling in the WRC, and in some cases maintaining an image based on previous dominance. Let's quickly look at other marques. Audi made a reputation for the Quattro in the 80s through rally racing but quickly shifted its efforts to other series to eventually dominate in LeMans with its marvelous R8 and R10, and that aura hangs over Audi. Audi's production cars proved worthy in Germany's DTM (German Touring Cars the "NASCAR of Germany" sans ovals) where they compete with other German makes like Mercedes, BMW and GM's Opel. The ETCC might be an interesting Euro series for Saab, but in the US, Speed's Touring Car series seems a natural playground where Audi, BMW, Acura and Mazda compete. I'm glad for the privateers who see the promise for the 9-3.
