Sorry to burst your bubble, but I must speak up: unless the "gaping rust holes" are a lot smaller than your description, I advise you to abandon/change this project now - unless you are quite skilled at welding and have lots and lots of spare time. I restored a fairly rusty Alfa Romeo Spider a few years ago and learned my lesson. You would do much better finding a different car with a fairly decent body and repair/swap the mechanicals if what you have works - repairing rust properly is not a job for the timid.
The first generation RX-7s are almost extinct in the Chicago area as most of them have succumbed to entropy - they are known rustbuckets. If you insist on going forward, be sure to check out areas like the upper shock mounts and suspension mounting points; unlike a "normal frame" car, the unibody construction of an Alfa or RX-7 uses relatively thin sheetmetal for these points.
