All Saab cars are made in Sweden. The exception being the 9-7, which is really a GMC truck under the badges and improved suspension. There was a 9-2X, which is the Subaru you are thinking of, but it is no longer available.
But I wouldn't worry too much. The 9-5 tends to be a pretty reliable car. Even Consumer Reports likes them and the '02 Aero is a very nice ride. I'd buy one in a heartbeat.
But do two things. Have the dealer go through everything on the car and find what repairs are needed that may be under warranty and have them done. Next, find a good Saab independent mechanic and start taking the car there. They are always less expensive than a dealer. I've had Saabs for 24 years and found they are really not any more expensive to own than other imports as long as you don't go to a dealer. Sure, some stuff is costly, but that's true with all cars.
And when stuff does go wrong, you can come back here, go on the 9-5 board, and we'll be able to help you figure out what's up so you go to the dealer or indy shop armed with knowledge.
Keep, and enjoy, your Aero.
