I bought a ScanGage which is basically an electronic box that hooks into the Tech II port and it gives you all kinds of info like fuel consumption. When I drove my mom's '04 9-3 2.0t Automatic with it, I noticed the following. When I was in "Neutral" but idling with my foot on the brake, the engine used 30-40% less fuel than idling with the car in "Drive". Of course you could wear out your shifter if you do this too often, but if you know you're going to be at a really long light or waiting in the drive-through, it's probably worth the savings.
Then I read that the new Saturn ASTRA when equipped with an automatic, will shift itself into neutral (internally) when stopped and reengages drive when you let go of the brake. I test drove one and on inclines I got a slight rollback which made me feel like I was driving a manual for a split second.
Just thought I'd share,
Atul
