I've seen the same thing, the "load" reading reduces by nearly 1/2 when the trans is in neutral versus drive when stopped. Part of this is the 9k increases the engine speed in drive, which increases torque converter and auxiliary loads. Apparently they do this to decrease vibration and possibly to increase coolant flow and alternator output.
The 9k owners manual warns against shifting to neutral at stoplights. You can easily get on the gas before the clutches are fully engaged, causing clutch slipping and momentary runup of engine speed. Been there. When putting the car in gear I always let the car start moving at idle before steping on the gas.
