I saw a television commercial today where "good" fuel economy for a small SUV was 24mpg on the highway. My '96 900SET with a 5-speed gets 30mpg with 267,000 miles and probably has more room! Even hybrids are only getting upper 30s or 40s.
Our family car growing up was a 1981 Datsun 210 station wagon (with the SL package, oh, the fake wood sides!) with a 5-speed. It got 35mpg on the highway...in 1981!
I'd stay with Saab. The safety reason that another poster mentioned would convince me too. Good luck with the 9-5 search!
