My '78 Scirocco had a 1500cc engine that cranked out a whopping 78 hp. It also weighed only 1850 pounds and went pretty good.

Its successor, an '86 GTI with an 1800cc engine that had 102 hp and weighed about 2200 pounds. It went real good, too.

And both got, as near as I remember, 28-32 on the highway, 22-24 local although I seem to remember getting a bit better when I behaved and drove slower. But they were fine for the 150K miles I had each of them.

Now I have 3200-3500 pound cars with at least 2X the power and lots more comfort that get the same or better mileage. So I guess that's an improvement. But most of today's "economy" cars are about the same size as my old VWs *still* lack handling, comfort and good all-around performance, while getting only 10% better mileage.

Somehow I find this disappointing.
