Flat tire, what happened?

This is the first flat tire I have had since 1984, seriously, and I'm wondering if anyone has any insight as to what could have happened? I drove about 15 miles on the highway at speeds up to 75. Parked in a shopping center lot and returned about 5 or 6 hours later to find my driver's side rear tire flat. I have to say that I'm pleased with the factory jack in the trunk, as well as the lug wrench. It took me 5 minutes and I was on the road with my doughnut.
I cannot find a hole in the tire, but air is leaking out of the valve stem. The thing that has me puzzled is how the sidewall of the tire was worn down big time - half of the lettering on the tire is ground right off which leads me to believe that I was driving on the tire flat for some time - I never noticed a change at all in handling performance or ride. The inside side wall is really soft. The tire is the factory original Michelin Pilot Primacy with over 45k (but enough tread depth that I was planning on using them through the summer. Any ideas?
Luckily, I had my original 10 spoke turbine wheels all queued up with brand new Pirelli's waiting in my garage, but I prefer the 5 spokes.
