A couple of years ago I was on my way home from a Sunday morning ride with the boys and getting off of the Interstate. It was a nice sweeping ramp, so I decided to lean into it. WHOA!!!.....back end got very weird and I straightened it out......talk about the "pucker factor!!!" I was right near a gas station and checked the rear tire which was very, very low. The tire didn't have an external mark or puncture of any kind and the tires were only about 500 miles old. When I pumped it up, the hissing was coming from the valve stem. Turns out it was a faulty screw-in insert inside of the valve stem. There was a blown bicycle inner tube on top of the station's trash can and that insert got me home. It seemed strange to me (and still does) that on numerous occasions such as this, your entire safety factor is dependent on a part that may cost you 50 cents to purchase and costs the manufacturer less than a dime to make.
