ABS really doesn't care what size the car is. It's an option because the manufacturers are trying to offer a lower price in the entry market to be competitive. It's an option because there are people who want it as a safety feature and are willing to pay the difference. I ordered it as an option on my 2002 Focus because I dislike having a mix of ABS and non-ABS cars in my driveway. This is due to the way my family matches the car driven to the need, which means multiple drivers. One son and I are comfortable with a non-ABS car, and can match or better the braking of an ABS car. I can't say the same for some of the other family members, so all of my cars have ABS. On the other hand, my motorcycles are non-ABS since I am usually the only family member who rides them and I am able to handle the bike without it. The son who is comfortable with non-ABS also rides, but then his racing motorcycle doesn't have ABS either.
