you get used to it being there. Then you nail the brakes and things don't go quite as planned. Two personal examples:

Our family fleet ('03 9-5 wagon, '95 and '96 9Ks) all have ABS, so I sort of take it for granted. But I rent cars often and many, I've discovered, lack ABS. I had the excitement of a high speed lane change and heavy braking in an Altima that I suddenly found didn't have ABS. The rears locked and the car started to go sideways --this on a two lane in the Arizona desert at about 80. It was no biggie, but someone who didn't know how to modulate the brakes would have had a more interesting time.

In another rental (Pontiac Grand Prix) I hit a deer that I know I would have missed if the brakes had been ABS. The extra fraction of a second while I went from "mash the pedal and steer" to "threshold brake and steer" meant I hit the deer with the driver's side mirror rather than missing it altogether. Of course without the steering part I'd have nailed the deer with the middle of the front bumper and it might have been in front seat with me.

I'm not convinced it is a real advantage for the average person who will still just stand on the brakes and close their eyes. You gotta be active in the steering part. But in lots of winter driving I've come to like it, but I can live without it.
