Approx. 12 years ago, I drove from Albany, NY to Scranton, PA to Syracuse, NY and back to Albany on a single tank of gas. Trip meter said 530 miles, 16 gallons to refuel, and my calculator said 33mpg.
The car was an '86 900 Turbo hatchback, the tires were quite low on tread and inflated to 34psi, and the first leg of the trip was held down to 50 mph or so due to the remnants of hurricane Bertha- in other words torrential rain. Luckily, once we arrived the clouds parted and the sun shone down on a really fun wedding. The next day we made better time (70-80mph) until we realized that both the hungover driver (me) and the hungover co-pilot had missed a turn in the middle of a bunch of construction in Binghamton. I was casually commenting how much different everything looked in the sun when we crested a hill and saw the Carrier Dome in front of us. Oops!
