I find that with econo-cars, they tend to be underpowered and their fuel consumption really goes up as the speeds surpass 60 mph. They strain and have to rev too fast. Thanks to turbo magic, Saabs just hum along. Add utility, safety, and comfort and a used Saab is a better alternative than a new compact car. Compact cars are growing in size too though.
I should note that if I switched from my 235/45R17 tires and 16" snow tires to more economical all season 16 inchers, I could probably get at least another 1/2 mpg out of my 9-3 SC 2.0 T compared to the current 28.0 mpg average.
