It's hard to learn science and takes many years, which is why you see so many taking shortcuts. The public seems to mostly put up with such people to a point. They won't get on an airplane designed by someone who hasn't studied, well, anything.
Interesting, BTW, that you're getting better gas mileage with your water/methanol injection system. I've been thinking about that, too.
Regarding the use of the word "research,", perhaps it's more or less semantics. The science folks I've hung around with would call what you do prior to your experiment a "literature review" ("lit review"), and then comes the experimentation, with more literature review occurring throughout, especially if the experiments fail. The whole process (lit review, experimentation, reporting results) is called research in those circles (I'm a chemist, in part). When you've produced the data yourself, the term "original research" is sometimes used. This term can be seen as a section heading in some journals, especially ones that mix research and clinical in the same issue.
In something like a law firm, the process of digging through case history and law is referred to as research. But that's a different world than the world of laboratory science, which seems to be what we're talking about regarding fuels, thermodynamics, energy, etc.
best regards.
