Rural gravel driveway needs a surface; macadam? Posted by ChuckD [Email] (#2127) [Profile/Gallery] (more from ChuckD) on Mon, 30 Jun 2008 11:16:33 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Wise and truthful Saabians:
We need a to resurface our driveway but don't want yet another black one like every other one on our road.
The drive in question is 400' long, straight, gravel (in need of at least some grooming), crosses a 1.5' diameter culvert. Our house is about 25 years old but there's an old hay shed at the end of the drive that appears much older. So this drive is probably pretty well packed.
Snow isn't too much of a problem (this is upstate NY), I have a capable snowblower and can clear it in 45 minutes or so. I may invest in a plow in the future but for now I don't mind going out and blowing it.
But again, we don't want to have the same drive every other glom on our road has and we've been intrigued at 'Macadam' or 'chip and tar' as an alternative. I've only just started contacting local contractors, and haven't mentioned the macadam option to them. The first one, highly recommended by some local folk, is coming by this week. Internet searches reveal 1.) there's a lot of mixed opinions about them, most of the negative coming from the asphalt contractors and 2.) they're very popular in Europe.
So does anyone here have any experience with this they could "chip" (sorry) in?
Thanks
ChuckD
