We are in western Mass with rather similiar climates. My father-in-law has a an oil and stone drive that's nearly as long but very steep. He had it re-oiled and graveled two years ago after more than 20 years. He likes it because of the traction he gets from the rougher surface of the gravel. He plows it.
I also have a 400' drive with a steep rise halfway into it and I went with asphalt, but I'm the only paved drive on my dead-end road. The prices were close, with the macadam being slightly cheaper, but of course this was before oil went bonkers.
I don't see any particular problem or advantage to either. They both have some heaves (we grow and harvest glacial rocks every year) but they prevent the constant washouts we used to experience before paving.
A neighbor in town had their macadam done with white quartz chips and it looks very cool, but I have no idea what the upcharge must have been.
