They pull up a lot of dirt and clean really well, but I found they don't work all that well on low-nap rugs or orientals, especially if the rug has a fringe. And if you have a mix of area rugs and wood floors they don't adapt as well as Dyson claims they do.
We thought the first one was bad, so we returned it, got another. Same story. The fringe of the rug would get caught and the vac would make this horrible clacking noise. It also made the same sound when going from carpet to wood, and the weird way the attachments worked just didn't cut it for us.
Maybe their canister versions are better. Plus my wife, who is pretty athletic but has a sensitive back, said it was much harder to push the Dyson around than a canister vac. We returned the second one, too.
I think I still have the animal hair attachment someplace, and some other alternate head attachment. They are purple, whatever they are.
