In relation to SAAB. To me, this confirms a long term commitment to the brand, and it also shows at least a possible solution to some of SAABs' problems. It does also provide a possible explanation to the pretty lukewarm efforts at getting SAABs sold here in recent years - it seems they are saying that no matter what volume of cars SAAB sold here, they were going to lose money, possibly even more money by selling more cars. M-B, BMW, VW all have assembly plants in North America, and while I'm aware that their NA built cars are typically not up to the quality of assembly of the European models, let's be honest here, and admit that, historically, the quality of cars built in Sweden is not generally up to the standard of cars built in Germany either. Now, please hold back on the flames, I'm not knocking SAAB, and I'm not saying that German built German cars are without problems, because I know they're far from it, especially in the early 2000s. It is true that "North America" does very possibly mean either Canada or Mexico. I have long thought that Eastern Europe would be a good site to build a 9-1 or 9-3, but it's true that while the wages are lower, there is still the real issue of currency fluctuations, and also the certainty that wages are going to increase significantly over the next 10 or 20 years as those countries become more developed and part of the EU. Maybe the NA is a good place to build SAABs. I don't think where the cars are built will have a huge impact on the quality of the interior materials; I'd be more concerned about a general decision to cheapen the quality, rather than a problem sourcing the quality. But, I take a lot of encouragement from this news item.
