Flexibility is important in the logn run and nice to have. I agree yoga and stretching may help. Still, some of this is genetics, and there are those who are lucky in that regard, but for the most part Railhead's right. A friend who does triathlons is closing in on 50 and is finally realizing his body, fit as it is, is not the same as when he was 30 or even 40. He is not happy.
My brother in law, who was an almost pro-level basketball player (did some practices with and tried out with the Celtics), has worn out both knees and now needs a new hip, and he's not even 60. Always been in top shape, but he just played too hard, too long all his life. His family has long-life genes but not the ones that hold up to high levels of abuse.
I've always been healthy and have avoided most injuries, but over the past couple years I have found myself dialing back the risks because I know it takes longer to heal. I still ski fast for example, but I'll make an extra turn or two between the top and the bottom of a run, or will pass on trails that are a bit gnarlier than I feel up to. I'd rather go almost as fast every time I ski, than go flat out, crash at 45-50 mph and wind up not skiing for the rest of the season. Been there, done that. I'm 58 and want to ski another 20 years, so taking some care seems like a good move.
