6 years ago I got together a bunch guys aged 50 to 60 for one day at Alta and one at Park City just before a conference we were all attending. We were all solid upper intermediate and advanced skiers looking forward to a couple days of "guy skiing." One of them brought, Steve, his 23 year old son, a decent advanced skier.
The "kid," much to his surprise, quickly found out that another of the "old dudes" and I had no trouble keeping up with him. He kept turning up the wick and we stayed right next to him or would beat him to the bottom on every run. Sure was fun to let him see that age was no reason to make excuses.
Maybe you pick what you do. Sometimes you get hurt, but you try to be smart about the risks. You get injured, and you try to come back stronger, or at least close to where you were. My philosophy is one I often close some of my business presentations with:
"The goal of life is not to arrive at the grave in a perfectly preserved body, but to slide in sideways, totally worn out, shouting 'Holy shit! What a ride!"
