Herb,
I am 63 years old and in April of 2004 I got a knee replacement with a Stryker Triathlon replacement knee. The transformation in my life since the surgery has been amazing, in that I can now stand indefinitely with no pain, and I am back doing all my normal day to day and sports activities. Stryker’s Triathlon® Knee System is designed for "more active" individuals who want to maximize the level of flexibility in order to continue participating in certain types of activities (I play a fair amount of tennis, do cross country skiing, and also do quite a bit of bike riding). The Triathlon® Knee System allows for natural knee motion and up to 150° of flexion, and I wound up maxing out at about 130 degrees of flexion by about 6 months after the surgery. The "bad news" is that this knee replacement requires a fairly large incision, and is not of the "quad sparing" type that minimizes the recovery time.
So, I believe that the level of flexion one can obtain is somewhat dependent up which type of knee replacement that one obtains, along with a host of other individual factors. I would continue with going to the gym in order to try to continue to improve your level of flexibility, an possibly consider participating in yoga classes to further work on obtaining additional flexion in your knee.
