Yeah you're young (though softball is hazardous - primary source of hamstring injuries).
I may as well chime in, I had a hip replacement in October at 57. The good news is that the procedure was extremely successful, and the hip is basically good as new (other than for running miles on cement, say, which might be imprudent). I'm looking forward to riding my bicycle up Mt. Washington next month.
I had a history something like Noel's bil - lots of basketball (though no one ever confused me with a pro level player:) So I'd give him the message that a hip replacement can be a great procedure.
I have no experience with knee replacements, but with the hip I've found that daily stetches and strengthening exercises help maintain rom and flexibility.
