cause suboptimal range f motion results in TKA- hardware and software.
Zimmer makes several models of TKs and all are designed to have at least 120 and some 155 degrees of flexion. The installation of the parts is not quite as machine-like as one is lead to believe. Making the femoral cut 1-2 mm posterior, choosing the wrong size tibial insert, a too tall patellar component can all cause diminished results. Getting everything to be a perfect balance of stability and flexibility is hard.
The other issue is the software (you). Most ROM is regained in the first 8 weeks, gains after that are small and slow. Almost no change is made after one year. Strength, wound healing, underlying conditions, and intensity of effort all contribute to the final result.
It is unlikely (never say impossible) that further gains in ROM can be made two years out. If it is a major impediment to you get another orthopedist (out of town) to give a second opinion on the placement of the components. Consider if it is worth another operation to you. If not, enjoy what you have go riding in your Saab.
