I'm no fan of the Prius, and was very unimpressed after driving one. But what we all have to remember is that this is early days for this technology and it'll probably get a lot better fairly soon.
I don't have a problem with hybrids (and I still think of them as hype-brids), but for me to switch they have to be (1) fun to drive and (2) offer the same versatility as my 9000 or my wife's 9-5 wagon. When they can tow 2000 lbs, handle well, let me pass someone in a flash, and drive well, I might just sign up. I'm pretty environmentally oriented, but I don't see a reason to give up having a practical, versatile, fun to drive car just to be greener. And they are flat not worth the money.
As for the bigger picture, I don't know. All the arguments I see one way or the other are slanted, so it's hard to know what is really true.
