Cargo Carriers Posted by Rod [Email] (#3128) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Rod) on Mon, 4 Aug 2008 09:32:05 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
My wife and I will be going on vacation for a week with her sister and sister's husband. Our problem is going to be fitting everything into my 9k. As roomy as it is, I am going to have our tandem kayak on the roof together with our Thule roofbox with all of the kayaking gear in it. I don't want to put too much in the roofbox since I believe Saab specifies 100 pounds as the max roof load and I will be over that already.
And we're camping, so as well as our regular clothes etc, we'll have two tents, 4 sleeping bags, cooking stuff etc. etc. On trips like this the car is pretty full with just the two of us and the back seats down, so I am trying to figure out how we get 4 adults and all that gear in there.
A hitchmounted cargo carrier seems to make sense. My main concern is that the standard ones are 60 inches wide, which is pretty much the entire width of the car. It would seem that anything on the driver's side would be right behind the exhaust, which doesn't seem like a great idea for anything flammable or meltable.
Anybody tried these on their Saabs? How do they work? Or is there another alternative I should be considering?
Thanks
Rod
