I paid for fairly expensive piece of test equipment I bought on e-bay through paypal. It was D.O.A. and the seller refused to take it back. He wanted to make an insurance claim on it, even though it was obvious that no physical damage occurred during shipping. Paypal would do NOTHING to help. And it wasn't because they agreed with the insurance scam; I don't think they were even aware of the seller's plan to do that. Their official stance was that as long as I received a package, no matter what it contained, everything was good. I even asked, "So if the seller just sent me an empty box, you would consider that a successful transaction?" There response was simply, "Yes."
I still use paypal, because sometimes you are given no other option. Now though I always make sure it's funded from my credit card; they do actually try to help me out when I get screwed. It's disgraceful the way paypal always sets your bank account as the default source of funds, hoping you won't notice, and even when you change it to a credit card they try to talk you out of it, claiming they will cover you against fraud. It is a complete lie. Paypal is probably one of the ten worst global companies. Pure evil.
