The winter weather here in S-E Michigan usually has some warm days (~50 degrees or more)in January which causes all the snow to melt. This snow melt then filters into the pool, raising its water level, with lots of bitter cold weather still ahead.
I always keep my submersible pool pump and cover removal tool handy so that I can open a corner and pump down this early snow melt to prevent freezing and breakage of the skimmer and other items.
The snow melt filtering thru the cover also eliminates the need to add fresh water to the pool in the Spring. A potentially big dollar savings depending on the cost of water in your area.
