This is what happens when soccer moms get involved with what was once America's favorite passtime.

Just because the kid can throw a 40mph fastball accurately doesn't mean he's unhittable. Noone, least of all a 9-year-old, is that infallable. I'd love to see if the same thing would have happened if the pitcher in question was a girl.

What's next? "We shouldn't be using bats, because a 9-year-old swinging a bat is dangetrous, and the action promotes violence." "There shouldn't be sliding, someone may get a skinned knee." "The first baseman shouldn't have to touch the bag, that's just too close to a fast-running child." "Can't we just roll the ball in from the outfield?" "I don't like the way the infield brick dust transitions to the grass, someone might trip."

CT moms, do us all a favor and teach your "Little Lord Fauntleroy" to crochet doileys or something if you feel playing with his peers is to "dangerous". I agree though that the "dangerous" BS is just an excuse though. The thing they really don't want hurt is their kid's pride--or their own.

When I was a kid back in the 60's we all had baseball mitts hanging from our bike's handlebars, and we gathered for unorganized sandlot baseball. No parents, no helmets, our own rules. And other than an occasional fat lip or skinned knee (which by the way I was more likely to get riding my bike to the game than playing in it) there were no "career-ending" injuries. Nothing that "rubbing a little dirt on" couldn't fix. We weren't all the same age either. And we, even though young, settled our own differences. I don't think that many of todays parents give their kids enough credit or a long enough leash. Another example of the wussification of America's youth.

The only emotion stronger than envy of a champion is distain for a quitter in my opinion.
