Does weight have a large influence? Posted by Rod [Email] (#3128) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Rod) on Wed, 1 Oct 2008 06:26:59 In Reply to: Re: Tire warnings--tend to agree, Noel, Wed, 1 Oct 2008 05:42:34 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I was quite nervous about driving at highway speeds with 8" wheels to start with, but got more relaxed (complacent?) as the journey went on and the bearings showed no signs of heating up and the tires showed no signs of abnormal wear.
Let me know if I'm wrong, but I assume heat is the enemy of tires. Heat is caused by friction, which is itself dependent on mass and velocity. If mass is fairly low then I assume velocity can be higher to create the same amount of heat energy?
I know a lot of autocrossers and track enthusiasts use this exact trailer to carry their race wheels and a tool box. These guys don't exactly drive slowly and I have heard plenty of positive reports from them. Again, 4 wheels and a toolbox is well below the maximum rated laod for this trailer.
I do actually have a raincheck with Harbor Freight for the same trailer with 12" wheels, for not much more than I paid for my 8" wheeled one. If they ever get them in stock (I've been waiting for almost 2 months now), I might be tempted to buy the one with bigger wheels and sell on my current trailer. I could then upgrade the 12" wheels further, as Noel suggests (I have a spare set of 15" alloys from my wife's 92 900 vert - they would look sweet! - just kidding).
Thanks for your responses.
