The whole country is not up a creek right now... much depends on what you can do or want to do, both workwise and spare time wise. If you are in something construction related, Texas is red hot, as is Metro DC. If you are interested in real estate, lots of opportunity in foreclosure activity in Detroit. If you're into medical research, Cambridge MA would be awesome, if you can stomach the high costs of living in MA. Climate is obviously different in all these places. In general, apart from residential real estate/construction, Texas has a very strong economy. Most 'on the street' Texans found it hard to believe that banks were failing and any government bailout was needed, because their economy is so robust right now. A significant part of this is driven by the sizeable profits being made in the oil sector at present. If you're in some kind of service activity, then as long as a local economy is strong, you should have lots of options.
