For example, the Raleigh-Durham, NC area here has been impacted, but not nearly as much as other areas of the country. With Raleigh being the state capitol, you have state government, in addition to several large universities in the area, plus a lot of hospitals and medical sector jobs...all of which tend to stay relatively stable. There is also a good mix of hi-tech, biomed, and other industries.
I have some friends that live just outside Madison, WI and it is similar there (state capitol, big university, mix of various hi-tech industries).
I think Forbes or Fortune just released a list of the 15 best metro areas for local economy in the current climate.
