OT - Advice on rebuilding my road bike (Longish) Posted by Wil W [Email] (#1148) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Wil W) on Wed, 15 Oct 2008 19:32:19 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Hi,
I'm sure there must be some bike experts on here so I'm asking for your advice on what I should do.
I had a 1994 Raleigh Technium road bike with full 105 STI and Campy Rims. A few months back, my frame began to separate at the down tube and I had my local bike shop try to warranty it with Raleigh. Well after 2.5 months, Raleigh is finally going to make good on the frame at least. They will replace my frame with a 2008 Grand Prix frame or the shop will give we 20% off a new bike. I hadn't ridden my road bike that often, but my primary use would be casual road riding and commuting. First, thoughts on what is best approach?
I'm thinking of rebuilding with the new frame but several of my current parts will not fit the new frame. So I have to buy the new parts to build the bike. So far the parts I will need are a fork (Raleigh Carbon Fork) discounted to $75, headset (?) for $45, front derailer (Ultegra) for $50, seat post for $20, and stem for $20. The shop is charging me for the "warranty eval" $100 for the tear down and rebuild (which I feel is reasonable). With parts and labor, this will put me at right around $300. What other parts should I consider replacing/upgrading as I have it torn down? I'm will have the replace all cables ($35), and likely the bottom bracket ($25). I've thought about upgrading the rear derailer from my 105 to Ultegra, but not sure if that would work with my existing cassette (8spd).
My goal is come out with best bang for the buck but without over spending, hence my thought of just spending $3-400 to upgrade/rebuild on the warranty frame. From what I could find, a comparable road bike to my previous one would run $1000+ so with 20% discount, I'm still looking at $800.
TIA if your thoughts,
Wil W
