Most flat roofs today use a PVC membrane for cost reasons, and walking on these roofs is like walking on ice when they are wet. Flat roofs also require installation of drains or exterior scuppers to remove the water (due to its enormous weight) from the roof.
What are the local building codes relative to structure height, exterior building styles, wind resistance of roofing, and fire resistance of roofing?
Metal roofs are long lived, high cost, and look good on certain styles of builidngs. Unfortunately, they require the installation of "snow jacks" in northern climates to prevent dangerous dumps of ice and snow unto people approaching/leaving the home. Contractors skilled at their installation may be harder to find and higher cost due to primarily commercial applications for this material.
Asphalt shingles are the norm for most residential buildings and the higher grades have 50+ year warrantees for shingle life as well as high wind resistance ratings. You should be able to find a plethora of skilled rofers experienced with asphalt shingle installation.
