Mobil-1 and true syntehtics are NOT made from petroleum. Castrol is petro based/cracked. There was a major lawsuit over the pure synthetic vs cracked oils a couple years ago. Mobil sued to prevent the cracked petros from calling themselves synthetic because of the base (specifically sued Castrol in the suit).
The Judge found in favor of Castrol. That doesn't have any technical signifigance, but it does allow them to label it as synthetic even though it's petro based.
