And those hydrocarbon molecular chains come from? Synthetic oil is made by building up hydrocarbon molecular chains. Yes, they don't come from the cracking process.
But those hydrocarbon molecular chains come from somewhere, and I suspect Sunflower oil isn't the source.
Petroleum is broken down into many chemicals for industrial use, for drugs, plastic bags, plastics, and oil. Those chemicals are then assembled into synthetic oil.
The source of synthetic oil is going to be some relatively accessable hydrocarbon molecules, and that is going to either be petroleum or natural gas. Both are impacted by the cost of crude oil. Yes, it isn't derived directly from the oil cracking process, but the source is oil.
Now, since most of the cost of synthetic is the chemical assembly process and not the base stock, the cost of synthetic isn't as sensitive to the cost of crude oil as something with less processing. But there is still a component of the oil price.
