I don't think there will be any handout; to be honest, I don't think a low interest rate loan is THAT big of a deal, when you consider the importance of the car industry. I think it's the right thing to do. Of course, short termism (crank out as many SUVs as possible, so we get the best possible dividend this quarter, don't think about the next quarter or anything else in the future, we want instant gratification, and we want it NOW, DAMMIT!). This is an enormous problem in American business generally, and of course contributed to the Wall Street meltdown, but it applies to almost every business in the country in one way or another. There is not enough long term planning. Not to mention that the whole thing was overseen by successive governments that did nothing to warrant a change in what Detroit produced. Of course, if any administration had increased fuel efficiency requirements, they would likely have (a) screwed it up with something like CAFE and (b) been trounced in the next election by a population who thinks it's a God-given right to drive an 18-wheeler to their desk job. I do think that one good thing that should come out of a left wing administration helping Detroit would be an emphasis on improved fuel efficiency. Of course, it could go totally off track, and focus on some hocus-pocus sustainable energy... (I'm NOT saying there aren't valid approaches to sustainable energy, but government will likely find a way to screw it up...)
