The ripple effect is one big, very practical problem. Another is this: A new president is about to take office. Can anyone think of a reason that would be so persuasive that he'd be willing to preside over the demise of the U.S. auto industry? (well, neither can I)
My 02:
We don't have to bail out all three of them. Chrysler aka Cerebus is just a shell set up by a group of investors. Ford is sick, but GM is sicker. Ford probably has the better products in the pipeline.
Between these manufacturers, there are too many products, some of them redundant. Time to slaughter the sacred cows.
The CEO of any manufacturer who has a V8 version of a 60s muscle car in the works should be terminated, because he obviously hasn't got the sense God gave geese.
Of the CEO's, Mullaly of Ford looks like the most deserving of a life preserver, but should be required to reapply to keep his own job.
A taxpayer bailout should not be used simply to prop up the status quo. Public oversight of taxpayer money is important, so the cronies on the boards should go and be replaced by public representatives.
Executive bonuses and fat salaries need to go. Be glad you have a job.
The union contracts weren't sensibly negotiated and helped make the products uncompetitive, so renegotiation is necessary.
The next guy who publicly says American car buyers were "unpatriotic" in their car choices should be made to drive a Cadillac Cimarron or Pontiac Aztec for the rest of his/her natural life.
That's a start.
