The Japanese and Korean companies that build cars here, and I think BMW and Mercedes, too, all seem to get along fine without the UAW. That certainly seems to help the financial picture. The UAW is as much at fault as the manufacturers.
But it's also decades of the short-term focus you cite that has led to the troubles in Motor City. The reason there needs to be some kind of bailout is the upstream and downstream jobs that are at stake if one or more of these companies fails. The trickle-down effect would be terrible.
GM, Ford and Chrylser dug this hole themselves and deserve all the pain they are feeling. One hopes they can learn from it and reinvent the way they operate to be truly competitive again.
