A heavy front wheel drive car will be best. There was an extensive article discussing this in Canadian Driver magazine. They basically found that mid-size front wheel drive cars like Accord, Camry, Sonata and, yes, SAAB 9-3, are by far the best all around winter cars. They are stable on slippery surfaces unlike most AWD cars. AWD has the advantage in terms of not getting stuck but handling is not as linear and predictable as it is with large, long wheelbase front wheel drive cars. I am not sure why, but despite having extremely short wheelbase the classic SAAB 900 is extremely good for driving on ice and snow.
