A few people here have reported this kind of thing happening, and it has happened to my wife, albeit at low speed. Her handbag, which is usually on the passenger seat, was on the console for some reason and somehow caused the key to rotate to the off position. It can happen. So don't put stuff on top of the ignition.

As for the supposed "cover up," virtually all companies, automakers included, have "company lines" regarding policies, product faults, parts issues, etc, etc. I work with half a dozen very large companies that sell complex technology and see it all the time. It's unfortunately necessary to have a consistent message or response in our overly litigious society.

Back to Saab. A handful of incidences regarding the ignition being accidentally turned off doesn't constitute a major problem, although it does highlight a design issue that people new to Saabs probably need to be aware of. But it could also be addressed with a slightly different ignition switch design. There's nothing wrong with the location of the switch, which has been standard on all Saabs (except the 9000) for 40 years

When you look at this more broadly, there is remarkable inconsistency in the placement and operation of controls in all cars. Ask anyone who has gotten into an unfamiliar rental car at an airport at midnight, in the rain, and had to figure out controls while driving to someplace they've never been. An ignition switch is a lot less likely to cause a problem than many other controls.

I think of the "unintended acceleration" issue that plagued Audi in the early '80s. It was not a mechanical failing but an issue of closer than usual pedal placement that was more noticeable for shorter drivers for whom the Audi 5000 was their first imported car. They would hit the gas pedal instead of the brake. Other makes with tight pedal spacing had the same issue, Audi just got the bad press. Audi also handled it poorly with their "company line," and got in trouble for it, but like any company, they had to have a standard response. Like it or not, this is how companies have to operate these days.
