Saab had a key between the seats since 1973. I think that pre-dates EDS. So it's got to be aliens. Now, I'm not saying Cheney can't be an alien, but EDS is off the hook.

Having the key shut off at speed isn't great. Of course, an engine can quit at any time due to a number of other issues, and I don't call that a massive safety cover-up. Do you know that running out of gas can cause an engine to stop? Call 60 Minutes! Heck, a fuel pump can fail and the engine will stop - we should have dual redundant fuel and ignition systems.

Yes, the key can be hit. And the shifter can be knocked into the wrong gear, causing an engine to stall. Sigh.

I've also noticed that while driving at speed, jerking the wheel violently can be dangerous. Same with texting, using a cell phone, applying makeup, or closing your eyes for seconds at a time.

I can believe that the Evil Overlords, er, supervisors said that it isn't an issue. In today's litigious society, it would be reasonable that they wouldn't launch an investigation into something that hasn't been an issue for the past 35 years.

I'm sure some folks were upset and scared that their cars may have stopped suddenly. I'm sure they would prefer the key in the 'regular' position, where it can perform knee surgery in an accident. There will always be engineering trade-offs.

Given the safety record of Saabs, I'd say the cover-up between the insurance companies and manufacturers were the early tin-foil Hyundais. Now, that's a conspiracy that an alien-turned-VP can get behind!
