I was talking to a colleague in Germany this morning discussing the state of the global automotive business before our work meeting started. Sales of Opel in Germany were down 37% for November!
We discussed the fate of Saab, and he said that Saab will never be considered a luxury brand in Europe along the lines of Audi, BMW, or Mercedes. I asked how Saab was perceived in central Europe, if it was considered a standard automobile?
His response was that Saab is considered a car for those who are not in the main-stream of society. I guess the "Q-word" is used there also.
He also said that any money GM spends promoting Cadillac in Europe is money wasted. Other than Switzerland, Cadillac will never achieve worthwhile sales numbers on the continent.
