I have had the fortune of being able to run a 100ft extension cord from the neighbor's house to mine. The neighbor is on a different line from the pole. I open the main breaker on the breaker box, and have made a double male plug that I set up in my garage. This runs half of my house including the furnace, microwave, sump pump, and enough lights to get by.
Relations have cooled with the new neighbor, so don't know if this will be a future option. Since there are only 6 or so on my line, we are the last to be brought back up, and 2-3 days without power is not uncommon despite threats to the electric company.
What size generator would I need if I only wanted to run the one half of the house in an emergency. If my math is right 3000w should be plenty. I have been running the other through a 15 amp circuit, though the wiring is rated for 20amps.
