Lately I've gone really sour on helping these folks out as they give me so much grief. They routinely overcharge with complicated multi-page bills and have no regard for the effort it takes to get their mistakes straightened out.
Double billing, incorrect surcharges, mythical service calls, unkept promises of rate reductions and special plans, averaging instead of reading the meter monthly and though they'll credit you what they're attempting to steal no regard is made at all for the effort and repeated calls it takes to resolve their mistakes. No sympathy from me if a mistake actually benefits a consumer instead of the other way. I bet the vast majority of time mistakes made benefit the company and not the consumer.
The meter is their responsibility. There's no way for them to know how much gas you used unless the meter works. They can't back bill you. Sometimes the routinely overcharge and have to give it back somehow resulting in lower bills for awhile.
Don't give up your good fortune with some idealistic or moral disclosure they themselves wouldn't keep.
