No, not exactly. I used to own a fleet of Dodge 15 passenger vans. I had 8 of them. A colleague in Las Vegas had 30 of them. In the desert heat you really don't need the block heater. What it WILL do is prevent some condensation from forming in a cold engine. At my location, our temps were similar to International Falls, Minn. I had block heaters in all of my Vans, and they were parked indoors at night. The garage temp. would only be 35 or 40 tops, but the exterior was -20. You will gain a faster warm-up time, and slightly better mileage. (from not being so cold)
The worst thing you can do to a car is start it when it is cold. By starting it with a block heater, the car is at least lukewarm. Maybe thats why all of my Dodge vans lasted to 375,000 miles before they were retired..oh, and my friend in Vegas... his vans lasted to 800,000 before he got rid of them, but they ran 24 hours a day, so they never got cold.
