while decidedly weird-looking for the time, being pretty bad to drive and mechanically questionable, had some good points.
With a fishbowl windshield and glass all around, outward visibility was great and the hatch was decent size. It's big advantage was width, and it could seat 3 across in front, a good thing because the back seat was terrible. But it lacked power, had numb, vague steering, and anything approaching a decent suspension.
But I'll bet a properly designed modern version of this type car-- roomy for 2-3 people, wide track but short wheelbase, hatchback, would actually do OK today as a commuter-type car.
But the original never made any magazine's top picks, which is why it's not on the list.
