I bought a new '96 Contour SE from Kearny Mesa Ford back in the day. Champagne (kind of like a metallic tan?) with a tan leather interior, 5-speed manual, 170 hp, and a sunroof.

No babe magnet but a perfectly decent car that cost me almost nothing out of pocket up to 110K miles when it departed from this life.

The money I saved buying/driving/insuring that car allowed me to travel the world. No regrets whatsoever. And if Ford imported the Mondeo wagon with a manual transmission to the US I'd be on that too. Check out Ford.de for what can be had for Euros, etc...
