If you want to learn how to weld you might look into finding classes at a vocational school/adult ed etc. The same could be said as far as learning body work. There's a reason it costs a lot to have these things done by professionals and that's because it requires and lot of SKILL, TRAINING and EQUIPMENT. While I admire your can do/run what you brung attitude a couple of thoughts. Garden variety welding takes plenty of skill to do right, welding on car body work is a big step beyond that. I know there's guys on this board who do it, but my guess is they have had plnety of "ring time" with a welder. At the very least I'd find a way to get a lot of practise on a car that you won't mind making big mistakes on. Secondly, rust is insidious. Once it gets a hold of car it's nearly impossible to truly get rid of. Cars rusted to the degree you're talking about more than likely have a lot of rust you can't see--at the moment. It'll be a never ending battle that you'll ultimately lose. You can buy rust free C900's (with a bad engine or trans) from sunbelt states for a few hundred bucks. The mechanical end of keeping an old Saab going will keep you plenty busy, why add body work to the equation? Finally, cars from the late 70's had a lot of driveability issues some of which can't be solved. Saabs from the late 80's/early 90's are much better cadidates and they can be had for peanuts in comparison to what you going the spend trying to make these cars daily drivers.
