I don't think Ricardo Engineering has had anything to do with the "current" iron block Saab 4 cylinder motor.
Ricardo designed the original 1.75 & 1.85 liter slant-4s put in early 99s. In about 1973, Saab took the work in-house, upping the swept volume to 1985cc (2.0 liters), completely redesigning the cylinder head, and redesigning most of the block, though keeping the layshaft to drive the water pump, distributor and oil pump. The result was a much more reliable motor.
Saab then redesigned this "B" motor for the 1981 model year, removing the layshaft, driving the distributor off the end of the cam, the oil pump off the end of the crank, and the water pump via a belt.
In 1984, Saab introduced the 4-valve per cylinder head for this motor.
This 16v motor was used in the 900 to the end (in 2.0 and 2.1 liter forms) and 9000 (as a 2.0 liter) up through 1989 or 90. This is the slant-4, originally designed by Saab in 1973.
In 1989 or 90, Saab introduced the 2.3 liter 16v motor for the 9000. This motor featured a completely redesigned block, which included dual balance shafts (using technology licensed from Mitsubishi). This block, a version of which is still used in 9-5s today, is a straight up block vs the "slant" or "1/2 a V-8" block of the earlier motors. It used the same cylinder head as the slant block motors (modified slightly for the larger displacement).
In 1994, this motor was modified to "fit" in the NG 900 chassis. Along the years, 2.0 liter variants and variants without balance shafts were introduced. This motor was installed in 9000s, NG 900/9-3s, and the 9-5.
At this point, some 35 years, on, the only common item between the Ricardo motor and the 9-5s 2.3 could be the bore spacing, and I'm not 100% certain of that!
